they prob mean thermal wear.
Its used to provide an insulating layer in addition to a sweater or jacket Just go to walmart in the underwear section and look for thermals.

Hi! There are certain items I need for a 2 week long hike.
On the packing list that I was given it said that I needed a set of long underwear (tops and bottoms: wool or synthetic) and no cotton

I have no idea what that means, what it looks like, or where to get such a thing. It would be extremely helpful if someone could describe it and find a picture of it so that I could see what it is exactly and tell me where I can get such an item. Thanks!

On more thing that I have a question on is: what exactly are heavy socks (wool/synthetic)?

I got a bag of synthetic crew cut socks, is that appropriate?

Thanks very much! I am grateful for any help at all.
:D

they mean thermal underwear, and the reason they say no cotton is because cotton doesn't insulate worth a damn! if you have to choose between wool and synthetic go for the wool! not only does it keep you warmer but it also has anti fungal properties ( they keep smell away)

as far as the heavy socks is concerned, they are heavier weight than regular socks. again i would say go for the wool, only because the wool socks will wick away the sweat from your feet and prevent you from getting friction blisters. if you must use the bag of synthetic socks that you have be sure to use powder on your feet before you put them on, so you don't have to worry about blisters. and take them off everynight, to let your feet get air

hope this information helps you in some way, and happy hiking!
