Hijab/Burkha debate on BBC1, what's your opinion on it?

Mine is that I wear it in Muslim countries, so to blend in and not attract attention. I don't wear it England, that's cuz it attracts attention which is the complete opposite of what its supposed to do. Aslong as I dress modestly, I think I'm just as pious as someone wearing the hijab/burkha. Plus, I saw this girl wearing the hijab but she was also wearing tight clothes and short sleeves, so whats the point in that?

Your position is entirely too sane and reasonable. What are you doing on the Internet?

I don't generally approve of public displays of one's religious beliefs, as they are only useful to point out the things that separate us rather than the things that we have in common. That said, I believe in the right of a person to act according to their conscience. Really I have little problem with the hijab or the yarmulke or the turban or just about any other simple head covering.

However, I think that the burkha/niqab is going too far. You're right--it does attract attention and scrutiny, just the opposite of what it's intended to do. It has no religious justification, only cultural. I don't believe that any woman would choose to wear it without strong cultural pressure to do so. There is no place for it in western societies.
