Highly rated films and actors you can't stand.....

Have to disagree with you guys about 'There will be Blood'. I thought it was amazing an Daniel Day Lewis is incredible in it. OP, if you haven't seen it, I would say that DDL does not ham it up at all in this movie. His nuanced performance, the cinematography and the dissonant score by Johnny Greenwood (Radiohead) combine to make this a gripping, dark, must watch character study for me.

I thought Avatar was fairly poor, and Sam Worthington's 'journey' was so heavy-handed it almost ruined the movie for me. Must have been a poor year as both this and Hurt Locker (good but also overrated) were both up for best picture at the oscars.

Both new Batman movies are good, but massively overrated it seems. Chris Nolan's film 'The Prestige' was a far superior film, but doesn't seem that well known in comparison.

Tom Hanks is pretty boring a lead actor for me, don't get the appeal.

All imo of course ...

Films for me are

The Matrix films
LOR trilogy
Alien
The Earth Stood Still (ok not highly rated but it was awful)

Anything with George Clooney or Tom Cruise in.

I detest 2001: A Space Odyssey

I like sci-fi and I don't necessarily need stories where everything weird is explained, but this bored me to tears. Pretentious, overlong and downright dull.

NB. I don't need people posting to tell me how wrong I am or I just don't understand it. I'm perfectly aware that this is a very celebrated movie.

Now I know he isn't exaclty 'highly rated' but I cannot abide Jason Stratham (I only nominate him as he has been in Lock, Stock and Snatch which are both 'higly rated' films :o)

Tom Cruise is another - although granted his films are on the whole a pile of shite as opposed to 'highly rated'

I concur with Daniel Day-Lewis. I honestly thought Gangs Of New York was meant to be a comedy, from what I caught of it.

Tom Hanks is another one. I think it stems from that period of 'worthiness' where for a few years, it was pointless any other actors bothering to go to the Oscars, and everything he's been in since then has looked even more off-putting that it already did (like The Green Mile).

Film-wise, anything in which CGI is a 'feature' rather than a sparsely-used technical means to an end. I saw a trailer the other day for something called 'The Last Airbender', I genuinely thought it was a computer game.

He was fine until he made Scarface. Since then, he has seemed to be unable to turn it down.

Try 'Dog Day Afternoon' for another great performance.

I reckon 'Donnie Brasco' might end up as his last great performance.

Regarding 2001, It was overlong and for some it was dull but use of the word pretentious really gets my goat. People never explain what they mean by pretentious and I personally have a tough time trying to work it out. I am not having a go, just trying to get a handle on why some regard it as pretentious. The message (perhaps that is why), the tone, the themes, the special effects, the use of Strauss, the sometimes overblown choral work (another candidate). Bear in mind this film came out in 1968 and nobody had seen anything like this before. It blew (if one was to believe viewers at the time) cinema audiences away. Surely Arthur C Clark must take some blame for providing the story?

As for Robert de Niro being a one trick pony, well that is just too strange for for worRAB. Its almost like people would have to be blind not to see a difference between Jake La Motte and Rupert Pupkin, but then again nobody said having an opinion was wrong. It is a shame he is viewed as such because I have been constantly impressed by de Niro's work.
.

Robert De Niro has no acting range? :D

The Godfather II (Mafia boss)
Taxi Driver (Vigilante)
The Deer Hunter (ex-soldier/steel worker)
Raging Bull (Boxer)
The King of Comedy (Comedian)

Replace each word in the brackets with Robert De Niro and you're there. It doesn't matter what part he is playing, the man plays it exactly the same.

'Forrest Gump' is the biggest pile of sentimental crap I have ever seen.

Jack Nicholson always plays Jack Nicholson.
I can't for the life of me work out how Julia Roberts became the viewing public's darling either.

Moulin rouge is quite shit. Saw it the other week and i was terrible disppointed. But Nicole kidman was brilliant. Don't see the hype.

High school music 3 and Hairpspray are the worst musicals i have ever seen. Don't see the hype on hairspray at all. That is terribly overated.

A line of question marks, I wouldn't even go so far as to call it a comment.

You may love De Niro but I've never seen a difference in the way he acts. He was great in Godfather Part 2 but since then he has played Vito Corleone in every film.

You don't have to agree with me, it's just my opinion but it is what I think about him.
