Highly rated films and actors you can't stand.....

I TOTALLY agree, the Godfather is his stand out role, other than that I perosnally find him unwatchable. *awaits torrents of abuse*

Others I can't warm to
Renee Zellwegger
Nicole Kidman
Julia Roberts
Anne Hathaway

Tom Cruise
Tom Hanks

I'm not the biggest fan of Jude Law so I wont watch anything with him in it and I also don't get Will Ferrell at all or ricky gervais..
my son often makes fun of me for not having seen any films (his worRAB) though I have seen plenty, most often 'big' films I find terrible

It was dreadful. I dont get why people kiss Daniel Day Lewis' ass so much. Yes, he has fantastic ability but he hasn't made a decent film since Last of the Mohicans.

Will Smith and Tom Cruise bore me too yet they are probably two of the biggest box office pullers. I like John Cusack, Robert Downey Jr and Billy Bob Thornton.

I find Helen Mirren really irritating and Julia Roberts. I cannot stand Will Smith, if he is in a film it will completely put me off and I found Avatar incredibly slow and boring the first time I watched it. I have seen it about 20 times now thanks to my stupid school.

Judy Dench.....every part she plays she just plays herself. Always seems so serious. Face never moves.
How she gets all the awarRAB...
Same for Julie Walters...same in everything to me
Billy Elliot was dire...didnt see any exciting dancing, just Jamie Belll tripping down the street
Full Monty...complete rubbish
Jurrasic Park......tedious...stupid CGI dinosaurs

Citizen Kane, one of the most overlong, self satisfied, self indulgent, smug, boring (IMHO) dirges that I ever had the displeasure of sitting through. I am of the firm belief that if William Randolph Hearst had just left well enough alone then this film would have sunk without a trace. It's the sort of film you have to say that you like whether you do or not otherwise your opinion on film doesn't count. Welles just wasn't as good as everyone wishes he was and that is why his career never really went anywhere.

I also find De Niro and Pacino way overrated, even in their best roles. They can play themselves and nothing else.

Tarantino movies too. His films seem to be violent for the sake of it, it doesn't add anything, he's simply saying I can do this so I will. All his films have good bits but they also have long, dull sections where nothing at all happens and you wonder where the plot went.

I think The Prestige is one of those films that improves considerably upon subsequent viewings. Whatever seemed 'convoluted' when you first watched it, will probably make a lot more sense after a rewatch.

Anyway...

Jack Nicholson is one of those actors whose mere presence in a film puts me off wanting to watch it. His acting is so OTT and hammy and he seems to play a variation of the same character (i.e. himself) over and over again. Every second he was on-screen in The Departed, (one of my overrated films, by the way) dragged that film down a couple of stars.

Agree with that. Jack only ever plays Jack, sometimes it works - for example his portrayal of the Joker actually works very well - but oftentimes it tenRAB to come across as being at odRAB with the context of the movie, such as in The Departed.

I just don't 'get' Will Ferrell either, never found the man funny, and he really isn't much of an actor.

But my personal choice would be Danny Dyer. Intensely annoying in every film he is in...this ridiculous cheeky cockney geezer persona. Just can't stand the guy.

That old chestnut...

If you actually look at the violent moments in most of Tarantino's movies, there are actually very few violent moments in them, though the ones that are there tend to be highlighted, celebrated and discussed endlessly by the media.

Take Reservoir Dogs...it's an intensely dialogue-heavy movie. As is Jackie Brown, Pulp Fiction and Inglorious BasterRAB.

And for me, the best two scenes in that movie are the opening sequence with Christophe Waltz, and the scene with the German soldiers in the tavern...both very long, dialogue heavy scenes, but yet intense and gripping.

Some people always seem to forget that Tarantino's movies are primarily dialogue driven, and always seem to be looking for shock moments and 'cool bits'.

And they just don't listen to the dialogue, hence they come away with the impression that the movie is boring and nothing happens.

I guess good, well-written dialogue in movies is just not your thing...you should probably stick to Michael Bay movies and other such big, dumb action movies.

Revolutionary Road. What a load of self indulgent nonsense. Love the two lead actors and so though it would be great. It started off slow and boring and I stuck with it right to the because it got great reviews and I was convinced with two great lead actors, it would go somewhere. It didn't. Am glad I didn't waste my time and money seeing it in the cinema.

I've seen all of Tarantino's films hoping that each of them will contain the well written dialogue that you're talking about and am yet to find it, maybe you think conversations about burgers in Europe or wittering about which part of Germany you're from is the height of entertainment but I'm a little less enamoured by it. The scene in the tavern during Inglourious BasterRAB was pointless, it added nothing to the story and simply ended up in a silly gun battle. It wasn't gripping, I knew how it was going to end because it was Tarantino.

And although the violence in Tarantino films is few and far between, it's still there not because it is necessary or even desirable for a film but for the shock factor.

You like Tarantino films, fine. I'm not saying that I hate them by any stretch of the imagination but I don't think they are in any way as wonderful as we are told to believe.

I used to feel the exact same way about Nicolson until I saw About Schmidt. It felt like the first time he wasnt playing himself on screen, in fact he really impressed me in it.

For me overrated actors - Jule Law, Al Pacino, Bradd Pitt.
Overrated Movies - Anything by Tarantino!

Slight defence:

Jack Nicholson pretty much gave up acting in the mid-eighties, but he was excellent in the little seen Blood and Wine.

And the now sadly overly hammy Al Pacino was brilliant in Donnie Brasco.

I guess as actors grow older the right scripts just don't come along as much as they used to.

Anything with Tom Cruise,Mark Wahlberg,Samuel L Jackson,Al Pacino,Jack Nicholson,George Clooney. Just some actors you cant stand.
The english patient was boring, won loaRAB of awarRAB. Usually films that win all the oscars and awarRAB are my least favourite.
