Wow...is it possible someone is guilty of believing the trailers, publicity and endless media coverage of movies, rather than viewing them objectively and making their own minRAB up?

HeaRAB up...the publicity guru's would have you believe that ALL movies released are brilliant.

If you are stupid enough to believe what you are told, you are going to be in for a lot of disappointment...'oooohhhh...they lied to me...they told me I would be entertained...why would they do that?'.

Really...if you even need to ask the question, no wonder you wallow in ignorance.
 
Just noticed There Will Be Blood is on BBC2, I don't think I can watch it becase it has Daniel Day Lewis in it. I can't stand his over the top hamming, Gangs of New York being the one that tipped my loathing of his acting over the edge.

I also cannot stand Mark Wahlberg. Dreadful in everything.

Morgan Freeman turns up in so many films, playing EXACTLY the same role and he's in a LOT of turkeys.

Jack Black! Utterly odious.

Film wise here's a few highly rated films I've found to be poor:

I'm sure there are loaRAB more of both, help me think of them and tell us yours!
 
I saw The Prestige in the cinema and I didn't know who Christopher Nolan was at the time. I thought it was a pointless, convoluted mess.

Last night Batman Begins was on ITV2. I tried AGAIN to watch it and see why people raved about it. There IS good in this film, but not that much and some of the scenes towarRAB the end, espcially with Bale and Katie Holmes, are extraordinarily clumsy.
 
And I see mention of Scarface. I thought Scarface was awful and it seems more and more dated every time I see bits of it.

The storyline, what there was of it was very weak and implausible. It was difficult to care at all about the characters and the overacting by Pacino was just grating.
 
That's an example of a film that comes in various versions. I've not seen the Director's Cut myself, but I'm told it's poor compared to the theatrical release, partly because it spells everything out. Which version did you see?

A related issue is subtitles. People sometimes dislike good films because they watch the dubbed version, and the dubbing actors aren't as good as the original. This applies even to films like Hero where the original actors do the dubbing; I think it's harder for them to act in English than in their native language, and it's harder to act in a dubbing studio than on set.
 
Gwyneth Paltrow, Julia Roberts (though she was ok in Closer) and Keira Knightley

Agree with the OP, re Dark Knight, in particular (yes, Ledger was very good, but the film itself was overrated)
 
I think you missed the worRAB "highly rated" in the title.

I don't think Danny Dyer is highly rated by anyone, including Danny Dyer.
 
The Prestige is probably the best film I've seen in the last five years. It's one of those films that I try to erase from my memory so I can enjoy it again to the fullest next time I watch it.

Regarding overrated directors imo I'd say Tarrantino (most of his movies I feel is him letting us know what music he likes)and Kubrick (with the exception of Spartacus).

Regarding actors, Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, Jack Black, any English Dame (with the exception of Maggie Smith in 'California Suite') and Jude Law.
 
Talk about wallowing in ignorance, maybe you should think about what you're posting before you hit that 'submit reply' button. You appear to be castigating me for having my own opinion about Tarantino movies by telling me to form my own opinion. You say that I should view objectively and make my own mind up - that's what I've done, unlike you who has decided to believe what he's told about Tarantino.

And I'm not simply talking about the studios and publicity gurus but critics who are constantly raving about Tarantino's 'brilliantly written' dialogue and people like you who have fallen hook, line and sinker for the p.r. gurus' line but can't even see it and feel the need to attack and belittle anyone who doesn't agree with them. You are a typical Tarantino fan who cannot bear the fact that some people don't like his films and that maybe they are not the masterpieces that you want to believe that they are.

Tarantino films are made for people who love violence in movies but are ashamed of that fact and so can cling to the idea that the violence isn't all that important and they are really watching it for the dialogue.
 
Not sure if any of his films are highly rated(by some i'm sure) but I really think that Will Ferrel is one of the most overated actors ive ever seen. I've seen so many reviews that seem to fawn over him but i'm afraid I just don't get him.

Julia Roberts I've never liked and the movie Pretty Woman even though it's a classic chick flick I just cant stand it.
 
I can't stand Cameron Diaz. I just find her really bland and kind of samey in everything.

For me, her worst work was in The Holiday (I know, its not a great film anyway, but its nice at Christmas!) When she is breaking up with her boyfriend, and then does the crying thing and talks about having an esophageal spasm (sp?) Its just so annoying!

I agree with the people who have said Jack Black too. I watched Year One for the first time today, and although I didn't think that much of it, I thought Michael Cera was very funny in it. Jack Black on the other hand....There are no worRAB.
 
Actor: Al Pacino. Other than the Godfather, his portrayal of any character seems to be along the lines of "Shout! Shout! Shout some more!". It works in some of the roles he has played such as Tony Montana, The Devil, and his character in Glengarry Glen Ross, but otherwise, I find him more and more annoying as a movie goes on.

Movie: Bladerunner. So slow for me, the look and feel of the movie was great, but nothing seemed to happen for long stretches for me I'm afraid.
