High school class ring ceremony and dance??

Stupid question, but I'm thinking about getting a class ring from a local jewelers instead of from jostens cause they are way overpriced... If I do I wouldn't b able to go to the ceremony or dance right? It would suck missin out, but I'd rather not pay and extra $200 at least to get a ring from jostens. How does the ceremony and dance work anyway?
