High fuel consumption on Ford Focus?

About 4 weeks ago I noticed a decrease in the average MPG which dropped steadily from 31mpg to 25mpg (urban). On the motorway things don’t really improve either with an average of 27/28mpg. I took the car to the dealership, left it there for 2 days and they couldn’t find anything wrong with it.
I don’t really know what to do now and would appreciate any suggestions

About the car: it’s a Ford Focus Mk2 1.6 Ti-VCT Zetec with 85k miles on board
 
Assuming all routine maintenance has been kept up on this vehicle then I would look at the Pre-Cat oxygen sensor. The pre-cat O2 sensor enables the engine computer to fine tune air/fuel ratio. As the O2 sensor gets older it's ability to detect oxygen levels diminishes and your milage will drop off. I have also personally found it difficult to accurately test an O2 sensor to determine if it is at fault. I would recommend getting a new one. Just the one that is ahead of the cat convertor, not the one after. The one after the cat just determines if the cat convertor is doing its job efficiently.
 
How are you working your mpg out? the only way is to fill the tank, run the vehicle for a time & refill, check the miles covered to the fuel addded. If this is low you could have a problem with the o2 sensor which is the major component which controls the fuelling.
