high beams not working on a 1983 honda magna 750?

i recently bought an 83 honda magna 750. When I turn the bike on, the headlight comes on, but when I turn on the switch for the high beam on the handle bars, the light goes out. It seems like the headlight is very bright, so I wondered if there is a switch like there is for the break lights that might have gotten stuck so the headlight is always on high beam and the connection gets disrupted when I turn the actual high beam switch to "on" which would be causing it to go out completely when i turn the switch on the handlebars. I had a similar issues with my brake light. the switch for the rear brake was stuck on so the brake light was always on regardless of whether or not i was braking. I'm not sure if there is a similar theory with the headlight.

Any ideas or things to try for a layman would be helpful. thanks

I would replace the headlight bulb with a new one first. The high beam filament could be burned out. If the high beams still don't work check to see if there is power at the high beam wiring going to the headlight. If no power at the headlight the switch could be bad.
