Hi I had a 2 level infusion l4-s1 and also a decompression of a bulging disc. this procedure was done with a discectomy and I had the surgery on 12/19/07 well we are 4 months after almost and went to the Dr. and found out I am not healing ( fusing ) also went to my primary doctor and he said it was because my weight . Has any one had this problem where they didn't fuse? I am about 70lbs.overweight & I would'nt think that would be an issue due to being layed up qiutting smoking, and taking steriod injcetion for serverly damaged nerves I feeel like I am such a mess. Can't do very much without being wiped out or in intense pain the next day. Is there any hope out there:confused:

hi yes my one surgeon told me same thing I would not fuse cause my weight, and I never smoke or drank.the other surgeon was all too thrilled to do surgery sure he after the money.

Now they are mentioning that I get the lap band surgery cause of my bmi is very high and my back will never be the same if I keep this weght on is this true I am sick of all the what should be done and nothing getting fixed!!

Well that's just great, I had that impression before when I had 10 cortizone injections before surgey and refused any more cause thay didn't work for me but now thay are injecting cortizone around where my scews are to try to relieve pain!! also want me to take pertnizone orally what would that really do for me?

hi they going to reoperate again?its odd how some people are skinny and don't fuse and my uncle was a blimp and he fused, but then he got to be smart by lifting heavy sod and has other levels issues now.but I hate to go through such a surgery to find out not fusing.very iffy decision.Heck I'm not going through any stomach surgery either.meRAB can gain weight too.

Hi I"m not sure at this point I guess it is one step at atime so I will keep posted!! Thanks for the wisdom and I suggest never get surgey on the back ever!! Recovery for me has been a nightmare!!

I'm fused and I am probably about 80 pounRAB overweight. I did have Gastric Bypass in 2002 and lost 165 pounRAB. I'm still overweight though. My surgeon said it may take longer to fuse being overweight. He did not say it would not fuse because of the weight. I think everyone fuses at their own rates. I learned from being overweight most of my life that they blame every medical problem on weight. Once I lost the weight they had to actually look for a diagnosis and not just say it is the weight. (true story)

Now that is a coment I beleive!!! Thanks i probally will go thorugh with the lap band surgery but am l little erabaressed to let family merabers know of this though!! Some never have the issue of being over weight or haveing back problems. Thank You again and let's keep in touch.
