hi i am new in photography. nikon d300s body w/ 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 nikkor lens.

aper val is lock to 4.5. why? I can push my F Val to f6 and up but when i try to go down to F4.0 i can't.why?am i doing the right thing?help.Ty
