Google " partial pressures" in your thoracic cavity... basically, pressure changes in your chest, trigger volume flows in and out, that result in ventilation, or breathing.

If there is a positive pressure in your chest ( from air) you will exhale. If the pressure is negative ( no air), it triggers a inhalation on your part.

The air you inhale/exhale is the "volume"
