Try banRAB like Arctic Monkeys, My Morning Jacket, The Strokes etc.. I'm not really sure how non-mainstream you're for here by using KoL as an example, but if she listens to Top 40 shit like KoL she probably hasn't heard those.
Recommendations noted :thurab: As for the Balearic chillout, I'm into my fare-share of the more laid back, night-music kinda stuff. Anyone you'd particularly recommend?
Personally I like Unknown Pleasures a lot more and would definitely recommend getting that before you get Closer. Also worth getting out is an album called Substance. It's a compilation of singles, alternate takes and early, punkier tracks from back when they were still called Warsaw. Some of their bigger songs like "Love Will Tear Us Apart" and "Dead Souls" are not on either of their proper studio albums but are on Substance. It actually works really well as an album in it's own right, IMHO, even though it's only a comp. To tell the truth, I might even suggest getting it before you get anything else by them.
I need some good metalcore. I've got a few Converge tracks, some As I Lay Dying, Bloody Sunday, but other than that, zilch. Some really intense, moshworthy stuff would be great.
I caught a bit of The Flaming Lips when I was at Bonnaroo and was pretty blown away by them. I'm not too familiar with them, what is the best album to start off with?
Another good way to go about it if you can't get any tips here is to check them out on RateYourMusic and grab whatever has the highest ratings - nine times out of ten, they're pretty much spot on. Works for me anyway.
Shoegazey Dream Pop seems like it's built for a girls voice, thanks for the recommendation. I'm really liking this Shoegaze Dream Pop stuff, can't wait to find more of it.
I dont know if you're into or have checked out Atmosphere, Blackstar, Mos Def, Aesop Rock, Brother Ali...some more of the more well known in the underground so im sure you have..but if not..check em out.
