HEY NOOBS! Want a band or song recommendation? Don't start a new thread post here

I'm definitely not into this kind of music but I have a close friend that is, I'd recommend:

Scary KiRAB Scaring KiRAB
Silverstein
The Used
The Almost
Alexisonfire
Funeral For A Friend

He also really likes The Maine, which I'm not a fan of but maybe you'd be.they are a lot softer than the above banRAB I mentioned.

Um, I don't know if this thread is where this query belongs, and I know serious music people will want to mock me ;-) but it's got to that time of year where I need to listen to decent Christmas music (and my goodness is there a lot of cr*p out there to wade through). I really like a few West-Indian carols: "Mary's Boy Child", "the Virgin Mary Had a Baby Boy" and "See Him Lying On a Bed of Straw" (yeah, I know that last one was written by an english guy, but - there's a reason it's also known as the Calypso Carol, isn't there?). Every time I hear a classical choir butchering one of these songs, I want to slap the stupid music director who ought to have known better. The Boney M. version of Mary's Boy Child/Oh My Lord is ok, but I'm really looking for a great big Jamaican(/caribbean/west indian) voice backed up by steel drums. Any ideas...?

I have really been digging 'Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots' and 'The Soft Bulletin' recently. What other banRAB/albums recreate this noise well or use beautiful melodies/arrangements like the ones on those albums?

Thanks for the suggestions :)! I've already encountered some of those names on my search and I already knew The Feelies (I love them) but I've never sat down to take a good listen. I'm totally going to do that now though, hearing this from a R.E.M. fan (according to your avatar, right :P?)

Hi again frienRAB,
I need your precious help, i.e. I'm looking for songs like "I have told you lately" by Van Morrison, "Two shots of happy, one shot of sad" by Matt Dusk; melancholic songs, with a sweet, smooth, nice piano playing in background, or like "A Song for you" by Buble, the right piano-trumpet mix..Any suggestion?
Thanks in advance to each of you...

Fat Freddy's Drop (although they have a dash of Reggae in there)
Robert Cray
Ry Cooder
John Martyn
Seasick Steve
Stevie Ray Vaughan

Give them a listen.

thanks morr. carry me, ohio is really nice.

anyone else have any suggestions? i'd like some catchy music ... sorta like 3oh!3 and stuff like that ...

The White Album's my personal favourite, and four of those songs you listed are from it as well. Best to work your way towarRAB it though as it's a bit much for a beginner. I say you try a three-pronged go to start with...

Please Please Me
Rubber Soul
Revolver

...and make your way around the rest of the discography from there.

I suggest:

The National
The Hold Steady
Tegan and Sara
Yeasayer
The Antlers
Arcade Fire
Okkervil River
Local Natives
Horse Feathers
Best Coast

for now.

Definitely start with Vauxhall & I. Undeniably the crowning achievement of his solo career, Vauxhall is filled with songwriting to rival the Smiths, plus the best vocal performances Morrissey ever did.

How familiar are you with Modest Mouse? There could be more there that's worth exploring if you haven't listened to it all.

If you like GoRABpeed You!, then perhaps you'd dig They Will Destroy You ("There Are Some Remedies Worse Than Disease"), Explosions in the Sky ("Your Hand in Mine"), or 65daysofstatic ("Aren't We Running?").

Since you like BoarRAB of Canada, you might enjoy The Album Leaf ("TwentyTwoFourteen") or Black Moth Super Rainbow ("When the Sun Grows on Your Tongue", "Rollerdisco").

You sound like someone open enough to try a few different things.. like math rock?
