I liked the story and the cinematography. I was blown away when I watched this, the colors were amazing. Now I've seen the hyper bright colors a lot, but this movie holds a special place because it was one of the first that I watched that used it beautifully.

Just had to come here and say I loved this movie, not only because I'm a big fan of anything that pairs Maggie and Tony together (go and watch In the mood for love, esp the Criterion DVD cuz that has tons of great footage between them) but the cinematography, the story, the whole package of it was just beautiful...I myself kinda overlooked it at first because I'm not much of a fan of Jet Li but I even liked him in this.

But the main draw for me was Maggie and Tony. I know they've done some movies together but from what I have seen, they only really get paired up in Hero and ITMFL...she makes some kinda cameo in 2046, the sort of sequel to In the mood for love which stars Tony playing kinda the same guy or both of them in the same movie but they don't really interact...I think they are just magical together...

Love,
Cindy

 nellie thanks. yeah i want to see some of the other stuff they've done.

I'm not the biggest fan of MC but she was great in this movie.

I like this chinese movies!!!their stories, their photography and the great colours they have!!!this one is no expeption.

I know! And I haven't seen any of them. :( I really want to though... I wonder if I can convince my dad to buy the movies.

Those are awesome! I really like the 2nd one. The pictures you used are perfect! :sigh:

I agree. When I first saw Hero, I initially didn't like it because of Jet Li's performance. I know he could be better. But, I grew to love the movie. Maybe that's the way Nameless was supposed to be. All his life he trained and trained... Not much room for personality building.

I loved the look and the acting... but I didn't love the story. That took away a lot for me. The cinematography was breathtaking though, and Maggie Cheung has been one of my favourite actresses since I was a little girl of 4 or 5. :D

I finally saw this movie recently. I was going to watch it over a month ago, but life got in the way. Anyway, I liked it. Loved the use of colors and the martial arts moves. Very artistic. :D

Hiya chinablue - welcome to the thread!

A Sinologist is someone who studies/specializes in China. No idea why it's spelled that way. For example, political scientists often speak of the Sino-Japanese relationship, meaning that between China and Japan. Make sense?

And yeah - there's no denying that it's a beautiful film and very easy to take. I enjoyed myself at the theater, but I definitely take everything with a grain of salt.

Also - as I said before, Maggie and Tony (Snow and Broken Arrow) should TOTALLY hookup (cinematically, that is)! They have fantastic on-screen chemistry! :sigh:

yeah, maybe you are right, but I still like more profound movie, thank you for your comment for "fluff",I think I know what`s meaning now:)

I am by no means a history buff, but how do we know exactly what happened? That's the point. No one really 'knows'.

That's why this was such a controversy according to the Chinese governement.

And fluff is just 'filler' - pointless stuff put in because it's flashy or whatever...

See there Jayta knows... Hehe. Hey Jayta:wave:

You need to get ur butt back over to the Jet Li Thread....:P hehe...

as a history lover,I don`t think hero has a good story,(It`s far away from the truth),but I like it`s art,color,and scene,music etc.
anyone just discuss if the king should be killed or not?I think broken sword and flying snow should married and wait the king destroy his empire himself, the Qin dynasty only maintain 15 years,It`s not too long, right?

by the way, what`s the word "fluff" means?I use dictionary, still don`t understand what`s your meaning in your text.shy..........

I could see where you're coming from.

Sinologists?

Well if that has anything to do with the story of the Emperor and the assassin then well, hey it's just a theory...if not...then...hmmmm, I have no idea what it is :D

I know that Jet Li probably was not at his best in this script, but you have to take it with a degree of salt. Because *he* really wasn't the 'lead'. He was just the storyteller. In fact I think the script was written in a way where there really was no lead, even though they try to tell us he is.

And you could probably tell that it was somewhat made for money, in that usually his stories have a deeper essence. Which is why he's won so many awards.

But still even for fluff, it is of a far higher quality than the average Hollywood movie.

I know I've posted here twice, but I don't see my posts anywhere. Darned FF Phantom! :(

In any case - yes, The One is Hollywood fluff, but then Hero can be said to be Chinese fluff, too. I mean, the director was pretty open about the fact that they made the film fundamentally to make money (the desire of all films, but not usually the primary intent). It may not be fluff as we're use to, but that doesn't mean it's still not fluff (albeit very pretty and entertaining fluff).

Also, the subtext/political propoganda of the film was a bit hard to take (and has upset several of my friends who are reknowned Sinologists).

Despite that, however, I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed myself - and Maggie and Tony are HOT together (which is why I'm getting In The Mood For Love ASAP!).

And Jet Li - he sort of walked his way through this film. I've seen him be far more engaging than he was here (except for the martial arts we get almost no expression from him - not even the intensity the "Hero" should have, in my opinion).

Just some thoughts...

I loved this movie! Course ppl that know me know im a huge fan of Jet Li. I havent been on the forums in a long time though....

Dubbing SUCKS compared to subtitles!

I mean they always manage to pick the WORST possible voices for these people...especially in Asian dubbings! Gah!

I always prefer subtitles to dubbing when the film is in a foreign language. Cuz somehow I feel the dubbing sorta takes out something from the movie. I was glad they played this movie with subtitles instead of dubbing it. Bonus for me since I understand what they are saying with or without the subtitles. :)
