herbert on family guy

When he first appeared he was funny. But now, he appears in almost every episode this(& last) season, doing the same joke("Pedophile LOL"), just like the Vaudeville Guy. If he did anything else it wouldn't be so bad, like in the Star Wars special.

Herbert: There alternatives to fighting.
Chris: Like what?
Herbert: Gettin the hell out of here.
***Herbert Runs Off Screen, Then Runs Back In***
Herbert: Nah I'm just kiddin', think about if I was actually like that.

I don't hate Herbert, but he's a one-joke character who is really only good for a few short appearances every so often. Herbert's only source of humor is that he's a homosexual pedophile, and when the same joke is played over and over, people get tired of it. Herbert hasn't evolved any since his 1st appearance in "To Live and Die in Dixie", the FG writers have just incresed his appearances to the point where the viewers are sick with the very sight of him now. This has happened with me to numerous one joke minor characters on The Simpsons, the main example being the highly overplayed and painfully unfunny (IMO) Ralph Wiggum.

I don't know why, but when they do it on the Simpsons, it bugs the crap out of me. When they do it on Family Guy, I don't really mind. In fact, they manage to make it funny.

Personally, I do like Herbert, and I think its great pedophiles have an unflattering characature of themselves.

I fell they shouldn't use him as much, but in cases like Blue Harvest and Petergeist where the character actually did something besides making passes at everyone was some of his best work.

But yeah, I can see fans complaining about him finally getting their revenge when someone on the staff decides to kill him off like the Caddy manager and The Vaudville guys. Too bad they don't do that on the Simpsons...

oh wait..... but then they do it with good characters. *&^&% Cletus.

They developed Herbert a little. They gave him a dog and other stuff besides attempts to lure children
some of the more recent haven't been as funny(Including quite a few parts of the special)

I loved him -- until they started putting him in literally every episode. Well, not literally, but more literally than it usually is when people say that. He's been absent from maybe two episodes in the past season.

Which I think is a bad thing. I don't think we should even know his name, really. He was much better as the creepy old man we knew nothing about, because he had that disturbingly mean edge to him. "Get back here, you fat sumb**ch!" The more we know about his day-to-day life, the less funny his appearances get.

I approve of probably about two Herbert appearances since the resurrection of the show: the Lord of the Rings parody in "Petergeist" and when Stewie got a paper route either last week or the week before. There may be a few others that were acceptable -- but not when it's every week.

...huh?

Personally, I think Herbert overstayed his welcome long ago, though, as hard as it is to say it, I find him to have a certain...charm about him. I'd bet anything there are plans to kill him down the road, though.

I actually don't mind Herbert, but like pretty much everyone else has said,he's pretty much a one note character (gay pedophile),though they have developed him a bit more in the newer episodes.....
My favorite Herbert appearance is actually his playing Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Family Guy Star Wars parody episode....I thought his singing "I've Had the Time of My Life" to Chris/Luke was funny...

Think of all the other characters that didn't appear in the special that they could've used.

Though none of them would've worked with the pedo jokes like the limp lightsaber and the song. Though the former is just a rip-off of Spaceballs anyway...

I wonder something, and I don't know if it's just me that tosses this around in his head every once and a while, but do the writers of Family Guy understand that they have other characters to use, or do they just forget about them (listening to some of the commentary they seem a tad forgetful)?

When was the last time we saw the Nudist Family? We had a Joe episode but there was no son to be seen (Seth said that the character wasn't funny but I doubt it would be that hard to make him that way)! The Goldmans are a bit underused too. They could have an episode where Cleveland gets Cleveland Jr. for a weekend just to bring that character back. Death appears every once and a while, which is fine. But there's a lot of wasted potential here, so I don't think having Herbert in the show is really the big problem.

Herbert is probably popular because the key audience for shows like Family Guy seem to like characters they can try and do impressions of. Check YouTube and you'll find kids impersonating Herbert, Quagmire, the camp Jaws, etc.
It's grade school/frat boy humour basically. Finding humour in social taboos, especially sexual ones. I thought Herbert was ok in his first appearance but beyond that's been over used and is the same joke constantly.

Francis (Granted he's dead, but this was a different universe, after all) would have been a perfect fit into that role.

But at least with Obi-Wan dead, we won't be seeing him in the next two Star Wars specials.

I just wonder how they'll do the new trilogy (if they get to them) with most of the core FG cast being used in the classic SW films. Outside of that ghost scene at the end, which they'll probably use Jake Tucker for Yoda and have Obi Wan hit on him.
