I would suggest for as long as you are comfortable doing so, up to a half an hour a few times a day. Perhaps in the morning when you get up; if you work outside of the home, after you get home; and then perhaps before bed time.

If you buy the gel pack ice packs, they are smoother and are not going to stick you like ice cubes would. You will need the light towel though because plastic on either a regular ice pack or gel pack might stick to your skin.

If you go the cold bath route, I would say for as long as you are comfortable once a day.

Other things you can do to help the situation is to use baby wipes instead of toilet paper. I would recommend the kind that have aloe vera and Vitamin E in them as well as being non-scented (perfumes can irritate sensitive skin).

For ointment, you can try applying regular Vaseline to the area. It is not medicating but it is protective and lubricating.

Let us know how it goes!

Hi. I've had a hemorrhoid since like March and it just won't go away. It really isn't that bad, it hasn't bled, it just hurts a little occasionally. The thing is that I would have expected it to have gone away by now but it just won't. I've tried suppositories and cream but none of it has worked. Any ideas? Thanks!

Presuming it is an external hemorrhoid, you could simply wrap an ice pack in a very light towel and then sit on it. I would advise another thing that would get cold to the area is, if you can handle cold water, sit in a bath tub of cold water for a while.

The idea is to shrink the swelling with the coldness. Hemorrhoids will often shrink back down and just go away.

If it continues to be bothersome, a doctor can "band it off" which simply is to place a tight band around the hemorrhoid. Lack of blood flow will make it fall off similar to treating a skin tag.

Best of luck to you!

I had one that lasted for months. At the time I was running machinery in a warehouse where I stood up most of the day on a concrete floor. This caused constipation and the constipation caused a hemorrhoid.

I got laid off from the job and eventually the darn thing went away, but yes, work conditions and other physical conditions can cause chronic hemorrhoids. In fact, pregnant women seem to be prone to them because of the pressure caused on the internal organs from carrying a baby.

Other things that can irritate hemorrhoids are wearing pantyhose (the sweat gets trapped and causes an acidic type irritation) and actually sitting too long without getting up. I have known people in that situation.

Okay thanks, but I do not know if I will be able to do it that often because I literally go from school to work to play practice with no time in between.

Are there any other ointments that you know of, by the way?

Well, do what you can when you can. A little bit is better than nothing.

The only over the counter preparations that come to mind are Tucks Pads and Preparation "H".

Feel better soon!
