I would suggest for as long as you are comfortable doing so, up to a half an hour a few times a day. Perhaps in the morning when you get up; if you work outside of the home, after you get home; and then perhaps before bed time.
If you buy the gel pack ice packs, they are smoother and are not going to stick you like ice cubes would. You will need the light towel though because plastic on either a regular ice pack or gel pack might stick to your skin.
If you go the cold bath route, I would say for as long as you are comfortable once a day.
Other things you can do to help the situation is to use baby wipes instead of toilet paper. I would recommend the kind that have aloe vera and Vitamin E in them as well as being non-scented (perfumes can irritate sensitive skin).
For ointment, you can try applying regular Vaseline to the area. It is not medicating but it is protective and lubricating.
