Helping finding phone with macro mode camera?

Hi everybody,

I need a new phone to replace my old one, but I'm having a hard time finding one. I hoped someone might be able to point me in the right direction.

The primary thing I need is a good camera, preferably 3.2mp or above, that has autofocus and (most importantly) a macro mode for taking close-ups. It doesn't matter if it has a flash. I can find lots of 3.2mp phones, but even when they do have macro mode it seems a lot of times it's not mentined in the description so it becomes hard to narrow them down.

I hoped to spend $150 or less (probably on eBay), but would spend a bit more if the camera took good enough pictures that it didn't need to be replaced for a longer time.

This is important because I collect toys and hoped to be able to take good enough pictures of things in stores that I wouldn't have to buy them just to take a picture. So it's also important to be able to mute the phone so it doesn't make noises when taking pictures.

Also it needs to connect to a PC through USB.

Beyond that I don't care much, however it would be nice if it could do these things:

Record video
Play mp3s (especially with an external speaker)
Install Java applications through USB

And it needs to be unlocked (or unlockable) so I can put a prepaid sim card in it.

One phone I found so far that sounds like it would work is the Samsung E590, except I read you can only install Java apps on Samsung phones through WAP (not by file transfer through USB)?

Otherwise, does anyone know of any phones that might meet these criteria, or know of a place where you can search for phones based on camera resolution and whether or not they have macro mode?

well Nseries nokia phones have pretty much the best macro mode cameras that i know about. even something older like the n95 might work for you. macro mode on these phones is top notch, gonna be hard to find anything else.

i think you can find a sony ericsson k790a for less than 150, possible to turn off the shutter I think it depends on the firmware though, but probably easy to do it yourself by modding the phone.

I wonder, has the motorola zn5 cheap now? 5mp, and supposed to be good

K790a has a better camera than the W810i. I believe that it does macro as the original poster wanted. Great phone. If I was still with AT&T, I would still be using the one I had.

Hey I hope it's okay to post a reply to an old message, this is just in case someone else it looking for something like this. I've been using the K790a for a year now and it's awesome Exactly what I needed, everything's nice and the camera is great. I was able to "mod" it to delete the shutter and autofocus sounds (very easy). The autofocus beam can't be turned off but I just covered it up and its fine, still focuses fine. It stays charged for 4 - 5 days when not being used, wears down pretty fast when taking a lot of pics but thats not a surprise. It takes very good closeup pictures with good focusing! The speaker is good, nice quality. Thanks again for helping me make this selection!!

Glad to see that you are enjoying that phone. I absolutely loved mine when I had it. I loved the pictures it took, and the overall feel of it. Enjoy!!
