Is there a more verbose explanation of what these codes do and why one would use them over the standard *228 update alone?

Isn't there also a code to type in on a lot of phones to find the software info and warranty date info? I can't remember it... it was like #(six digits)*

Depends on the phone. Try #HELP*HELP. Some may have this information under Settings & Tools > Phone Info.
