Help!!!!!!!!!!!

I have what looks like a really big tastebud on the back right side of my tongue. Actually, if I stick my tongue out really far, it looks like it's on the side of my tongue. It's almost clear looking, but at the same time, it's the same color as my tongue. I noticed it 16 days ago. It doesn't bleed or hurt or anything. I went to the doctor, and he said he doesn't think it's cancerous, and that if it's not better in 3 weeks, I need to come back to see him. My next appt with him is tuesday of next week. If it's not better (and it isn't), he said he'd refer me to an ENT. What I want to know is, if I make an appt with an ENT and pay for it myself, will my insurance pay for anything if I have to have something done, especially since my GP will make the recommendation anyway?

I'm really freaking out about this thing on my tongue. I've been smoking for 22 years, and have tried off and on to quit, but have never really been successful for more than a couple of weeks. I'm almost 39 years old, and have 2 kids and a hubby that I need to be here for.

I just want to know what this thing is, and if it's something bad, I want to tackle it asap. Just hate waiting to see my GP next week, then waiting some more for the ENT.

Any info would be GREATLY appreciated!

I would go to the Dentist first, they are trained to look for oral cancers. The Dentist should be able to tell you if it's harmless or if you need to have it checked further. Goodluck.

My Mom's primary said that this lesion on her face was benign. We went to a dermatologist & the lesion came out to be squamous cell cancer. Moral of the story? Never trust what a non specialist says. It could kill you.
