Hello everyone. I just don't know where to post this question. I've looked and looked all over the internet and cannot find anything that even remotely addresses this problem.

My mother is 93 years old. She emits an extremely strong, very unpleasant body odor. It is not a sweat type odor - it is a decaying fruit smell as best as I can describe it. Sour, vinegary, sharp, and very, very nasty. It is almost impossible to sit next to her or in a car with her. The smell will come for a week or two, then go away for a short while, then come back, etc.

She is very healthy for 93. That is, she does not have any ongoing medical conditions which she takes medication for (no heart disease, blood pressure problems, no cancer . . ). She does have a history of bad nasal polyps and also a history of esophegal stricture which still bothers her sometimes. My family and I believe this might be related to the ENT area, but we are not at all sure.

We keep her clean with clean clothes daily, showers every other day, etc. It is just not the type of smell that can be associated with personal hygeine.

Any help at all will be appreciated. Even if you can only give me clues as to where I might find more information.

Thank you.

Are you washing her in the shower or is she doing it herself? She may not be using soap and shampoo properly if she's doing it alone. It's easy to miss all the cracks and crevices, especially behind the ears. Be sure her hair is thoroughly washed and conditioned. Hope that helps, if not, maybe you should ask her doctor about it :)

has she ever been tested for diabetes?
that can give someone a fruity smell to their breath
