Help with Regulator/Rectifier Honda VF750 1984 &headlight**?

Hi there, I recently dismantled my bikes engine and wiring to respray the whole lot. I accidentally connected the green earth to batt pos on first few cranks and realised there was no spark and looked for a prob which I soon found - I think ive fried my regulator/rectifier? It seems sealed, is there anyway to repair the diodes inside? Ive popped a multimeter on it with the exit wires unplugged and I read about half a volt or so on each of the 2 red/white cables (that go straight to the solenoid which is where the batt charges). This indicates a bust unit yes? Whats odd is the batt was @ 13 volts, and when running it went to about 14.6v, so im assuming the things still works just at a fraction of the volts?

My question is - can I take say a unit from a kawa or something else with the same system and rewire it to work on mine? surely 90% of bikes from the 80's use a 3 wire/phase AC current on a 12v system? They are an ARM and a leg here - or could I take it to an electrician to repair? Can I get a universal unit (12v 3 phase) from anything and use that? just scoping out some options cos im only riding in the day without lights @ the mo :( plus - why didnt i bust a fuse?? I might want to put a fuse between these wires and the solenoid for the future - what amps fuse should I use? 10 amp should be fine yes?

** Q2:

I want to have an open street fighter look and drop the top cowl/clock etc.. What could I pop on there light wise and clock wise? I dont care what bike its from - Ill tie up the wiring neatly and make it look as good as possible - I just want to have a light (os use mine) and speedo/fuel/rpm in 2 units. Would a cb400 99 model work? Im not even phased about 100% accuracy, as long as theres something, i can always check how much its out and compensate for the cameras :)
