I know there are 8 gazillion oil questions on here:) I was at the dealer. they sell several brands including Honda and Suzuki. Anyway I need oil for an oil change before winter gets here in Wisconsin. The bike will be stored after the oil change. The dealer is out of synthetic Suzuki oil. So the parts guy sells me Honda synthetic oil.It is 10w 30. I recently got married and my Wife moved in and moved ALOT of stuff around:) I cannot find my manual.Does Suzuki recommend 10 w30 for the bike?

I DO NOT want to do any damage to the bike.

I certainly appreciate the help.

I just changed my oil Saturday and I used Amsoil 10w-40 synthetic motorcycle oil and a K&N filter. The 17mm nut on the end of the filter is so handy. I picked up K&N filters at Farm and Fleet for 8.99. Use any good quality oil that is non energy conserving. The last number has to be at least 40.

It doesn't HAVE to be any such thing......especially not with a synthetic.
It probably SHOULD be 40 but 30 will be JUST FINE where he lives (and you too, it appears) up to at least the end of July. By then, he might be due for another change.

A slight difference in the weight of the oil will NOT hurt anything.

What ??

For starters, any brand of motorcycle oil.

I admit that I am not in the habit of reading the details on the label of all the oil that I DON'T intend to buy........but just a year or so ago NONE of the commonly available 10W30 oils were "energy conserving". Have things changed THAT much ??

If you look at the round (doughnut) symbol on the back of the oil bottle, it will say energy conserving on the bottom half of the circle. Energy conserving oils have friction modifiers that my S50 manual says can cause clutches to slip. Everything I've read about cycle oils says to not use these. All oils that I've seen so far that are 5w-30 or 10w-30 are unsuitable for cycle with wet clutches.

I agree with 5W30 but am skeptical about 10W30. Exactly how many of them have you seen that are labeled "energy conserving".

Well, if you're going to be that way...

Any 10w/30 in the proper quantity will protect your engine. The only questions are change interval and transmission (shifting) performance.

Hey Easy, I noticed on other oil threads that you use 15w-50 oil and you recommended at least10w-40 oil because it won't hurt your transmission. I'm confused.

Sigh. The bottom line IS: a small difference in viscosity is NOT IMPORTANT. Mfg's recommendation is the best place to START.......and stay with unless there is some good reason to change.

If the "book" says 10W40, then 10W30/40/50 will work just fine; so will 15W30/40/50. It is just NOT that important.......unless you live in an extreme climate. Very cold, avoid higher numbers. Very hot, avoid the lower ones.

Anything that says "energy conserving" in the lower half of the ratings circle is to be avoided. Those generally are the 0W and 5W varities. Other than that, your bike will probably run fine and for a LONG time regardless of what oil you use.........unless you do something stupid like try to use non-detergent 2-cycle oil or the $.75 a quart stuff from Dollar General.

Is that any better?

I personally use Mobil 1 Synthetic motorcycle oil because I can find it easily at Auto Zone, I KNOW it won't hurt the bike and I'm a little anal about having a little extra margin of safety should I run over a change interval or have it overheat. It is a personal choice, by NO means necessary.

I use Mobil 1 cage oil in both cars too. In everything else (truck, tractor, 2 lawn mowers, pressure washer) I use Rottella T "synthetic". I think it is 5W40 and that doesn't match the "recommendation" for ANY of that equipment......but it works just fine in all of it. It probably would work fine in the bike and cars too. Minor differences are just NOT that important.

I have an answer. All of the 10w-30 oils in my garage say energy conserving. I was out shopping today and I saw a couple of brands that were not energy conserving. About 6 others were energy conserving. I guess you really have to be careful. Also, I saw Mobil 1 Motorcycle oil at Walmart. I have never seen that before It was less than 7.00 a quart.
