my child was excepted to a university in california, we checked her into her dorm august 20th, she filled out her fafsa paperwork back in february and we though everything was fine until we received a bill for $2300.00 due by sept 5th. to cover her dorm. this was very unexpected. I spoke to the financial aid office and come to find out we were missing our 2008 tax returns. they have since been faxed to the school and is now being processed, they stated it will take 4-6 weeks to process but by then my child will be evicted from the dorm and her fee deferment will be canceled, does anyone have any suggestions? please help!

Depending on what kind of financial aid your child was expecting, you might be able to receive it as a refund check when the processing is finished. Of course this means you would have to pay the $2300 bill upfront by the due date. If you have the money to do it, take the hit, pay the bill, keep the dorm, and you'll get the money back in a refund check when everything's processed. Also, some schools have payment plans that you can enroll in so that you can pay a little at a time, meaning you wouldn't have to pay the whole bill right now (maybe that's what you meant by fee deferment?). Be careful though, some schools work differently and the situation may depend on the kind of aid you were expecting to receive.
