From victum to final girl : Women in slasher films.

Also will be going on about how woman are being looked at as threatening now as woman are nopw being killiers (urban legenRAB, saw 3). Sorry really bad wording.

Is anyopne here able to tell me where to find, or if they've got them send me a link to sources, journals or anything that could be useful to this subject.

Films basing it on are, Psycho, Halloween (1978), Friday 13th, Nightmare On Elm Street, Scream, Urban Legend, I know what you did last summer, Mertyrs, Antuchrist, Saw 3, Hostel 2.

Thanks, any info will be appreciated.

you need to include texas chainsaw

also mention hitchcock - i think it was him who said women are better as the vitcim in films like this? google it anyway

Is this uni or college?

I'll give you a few tips - don't chose that many - do a detailed discussion about a couple of them, rather an a summary of loaRAB. You can use the others to compare to the main ones you are doing. Find the ones you can talk about more and talk about them.

I think a lot of it is repressed/not so repressed sexuality in directors.

victimising women is not healthy,. in general I think.

(I'm male btw, despite the name)

Look at these as well

Copycat
Black Christmas
Hellraiser

and you meet find stuff like these interesting

Peeping Tom (seminal influence here surely)
Frenzy
The Collector

A film staring Michael Cain in 1980 called 'Dressed to Kill' was slammed by feminists when it first came out as it had negative undertones to women and many thought it was a look through the directors mind to his hatred of women in general.

You should check out the R1 dvd which carries the choice of Directors Cut (unrated) and the regular version that we get .

The documentary also covers the feminist nutters who demonstrated - probably the same ones who didn't like Basic Instinct

One of the best things you need has been mentioned, that 'Chainsaw' book in the link. Wonderful book for such things.

I did 'women in horror films' for my coursework. Well I narrowed it down to a specific actress - Sarah Michelle Gellar. For example, a stereotypical representation of women is that the good looking ones get killed off like SMG was the damsel in distress and killed off in both Scream 2 and I Know What You Did Last Summer. But, both films has lead female roles, which both were appealing to the eye. I referred to a theory by Laura Mulvey called 'the male gaze' where basically it talks about women being seen as sexual objects. I argued both for and against this.

Sorry it's not very crystal-clear - I was struggling to remember what I wrote for the essay.

'I Spit On Your Grave' would be an interesting film to look at as it features a woman as both victim and killer, and being from 1978 portrays a woman as threatening long before 'Urban Legend' and 'Saw'.
