Im just entering the world of Blu Ray so does anyone have any tips? Any advice for where to get cheap disks? Im also using this via my PS3 so can anyone tell me if i can buy disks from America etc if they will play? Are there any restrictions for me?

Thats a good place to start.

Basically - about 75% of US titles are region free so will play on your PS3.

Warner dont region code anything while Fox code every single title.

Disney code a few and most others are a mixture so you need to check before buying.

But the US market is more mature than ours and pretty much every title will be available for

For most part buy your Blu-rays online, Play.com, the hut.com, amazon. Here's a link to a good DVD & HD price comparison site. Just type in the title and format and it'll give a list starting with cheapest: http://www.hdanddvdbargains.com/. But still check the aforementioned, cause sometimes they're not on the lidt, dunno why.

Oh, and Ebay of course.

Also, if you're in any stores, always have a browse for a bargain. Asda, Toys R' Us, etc.

Here's an older list of region free Blu rays: http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=478825

I've bought a few: 2001, TMNT, 20 Million miles to earth, Close encounters and a couple more. I didn't check region at time and all have been fine.

happy viewing, Blu ray is great.

PLAY.COM only supply UK discs so they are overpriced.

PLAYUSA do supply US discs but again they are over priced compared to Amazon Marketplace sellers who can usually supply films for under

I have it and its superb.

The Bluray also comes with the new 75 minute documentary from Anchor Bay USA's 4 disc Ultimate Edition dvd set that interviews the cast and crew as they are today - although that is not in HD

I have the anchor bay 4 disk set.Is there anything different on the Blu Ray apart from it being better picture? Also i dont have any kind of home theater. Is it worth my while waiting till ive got a good sound system before i go buying DVRAB or will the picture and sound be good enough as it is?

Ive been told i can only play british dvRAB on my ps3 as its a 40gb one.Only the 60gb one plays any multi region ones. Can anyone tell me if this is true?

Whether its 40 or 60 has no relevance to dvd region coding at all.

The PS3 will only play R2 or R0 dvd's (or R1 if you buy a US box off Movietyme).

The main thing thats missing from the 40 apart from the obvious smaller hard drive :

60 played 75% of PS2 games - the 40 plays none

60 played SACD in 5.1

I think there a couple of other things but I'm not a gamer so I dont recall them

Well i know it doesnt play SD Region 1 DVRAB. I have a list of region free blu rays that i want i just dont want to buy them incase they wont work. I was under the assumption most people who played blu rays had a PS3 as i havent seen stand alone players anywhere.

There are quite a few US dvd's that the PS3 will play but thats because they are region 0 or like a lot of Warner tv titles they are coded for more than one region.

If the Bluray discs are region free they will play on your PS3.

If they are coded for Region A they will not play on a standalone either unless you specially get a multiregion one

I was told Warner have no region encoding whatsoever on any of their titles.Im told Fox do region encode their titles.Disney have a few that are region free. Basically im just gonna have to do some research before i buy anything. Now that im heading into HD and i dont have my old home theater system.Do you think you can still enjoy films through your televisions speakers?

Also im noticing a huge improvement on all channels and SD DVRAB i watch. They look great. Is there really that much of an improvement with blu ray? Am i gonna be blown away like people say i will?

When all said and done films should be about stories etc - but if you are into action adventure or many other kinRAB of films then the soundtrack is half the experience.

Go for a 5/6/7.1 demo.
There's no comparison with 2 little telly speakers

If your tv is 32" or over I would say that if you dont notice the improvement over dvd you should sell it all and forget about HD.

It is 32" and i did have a home theater system before this.It was 5.1 and was quite good but wasnt good in other ways as when i was watching a musical for example, rocky horror picture show or more recently, high school musical. There was no way to adjust any frequency levels or anything. So it sounded a little flat.I like a lot of treble for instance when i listen to music.

Many amps dont have adjustments for treble and bass.

The sound comes from your dvd player via the digital cable and out through the speakers as it should be - in its original form so there is no need to adjust bass /treble etc.

However if your personal preference is to mess about with the sound then any decent amp will have a selection of preset modes for various types of programming .

Eg: games ,music , movie,mono,sci-fi and many more where the sound will be changed .

That should do the job for you

The music just sounded a little flat. And my DVD player.......came through the scart cable lol. There were presets on it but none that were quite right. About the picture quality,im sure it will be good, do you think it will be enough to get me hooked and wanna buy more and more movies? Or will it just be a case of anytime im buying a new movie ill just buy the blu ray rather than SD DVD.

If you have only listened to sound via the scart lead then you havent heard the sound properly

No 5.1 for starters - thats only available via the digital outputs.

The best you will have heard is standard Pro-Logic surround - assuming you had 5 speakers.

I buy Bluray for new titles and key classics .

I wont be upgrading my dvd collection all to BD - not by a mile as I have several thousand dvd's

5 40watt speakers and a big 80 watt bass speaker.Nothing digital though. It was the most basic of setups lol. My problem now is people telling me to forget the PS3 and buy a standalone blu ray player.Plus i do want a home theater.I cant afford it all at once.I need to focus on one thing at a time. When i said no digital i meant just the connections from the TV to the DVD player. The speakers were connected to the player via little red and black wires.
