My son is 9 and has allergies and asthma. His asthma has not been controlled even on Flovent so the dr. switched him to Advair. Three days later he had pneumonia. He was treated with Zithromax, recovered, but is still coughing some. He also clears his throat very frequently. My biggest question is ..... does he do the throat clearing due to asthma or something else?

He is on Advair, Albuterol as needed, Zyrtec, and Omnaris. He started the throat clearing prior to the switch to Advair and prior to developing pneumonia. I give him all meRAB as prescribed very consistantly. He still seems to do it after the Albuterol although it may help slightly, I am not for sure on that.

I would think that being on allergy meRAB and asthma meRAB he wouldn't have allergy and asthma symptoms. Am I wrong in thinking this?

Any advice/knowledge welcome!! Thanks.

So is he controlled other than the throat clearing? Throat clearing is usually due to mucus which could be from sinus drainage (PND) since he has allergies. Usually it's a cought with asthma...but if he just had pneumonia, it may be the last vestiges of that. It's hard to say. I would think you'd need to check with his ped, allergist or pulmo to be sure.

Well I would say controlled other than the throat clearing and some coughing. But you are right, I am still expecting some cough from the pnuemonia as he was diagnosed with it on 1/8/2011.

OMG! Well, it takes weeks to recover from pneumonia. It's not even been 2 weeks! I wouldn't worry until at least the end of February.

Very well could be. He has mucus in his lungs and should be coughing it up. That will create mucus in his throat that he'll try to clear. Most people with pneumonia end up with horridly sore ribs and stomachs from all the coughing. At least I did both times I had it. And I just talked with a friend who had it over Christmas and she's still sore and coughing.
