help with boost mobile phones.. some one help please?

to get a boost mobile phone what do i need? Can i buy calling cards or does it have to be like that $50 a month stuff? also is it a contract, like i have to paying the pay a certain amount every month for a certain period of time? Whats the best way i can do this because i do not have a steady income to pay $50 a month..im 16 if that matters. Also im buying a phone from craigslist do i need to make sure this phone has a sim card or something like that to make sure i can activate it? ...thanx
