Help with a frozen bicycle please...?

My other half works nights and has to leave his bike in an uncovered, unsheltered bike stand. The last two mornings because of how cold it is the brakes have been frozen.
Is it possible to spray de-icer on or can this damage the bike?
If you can't use de-icer does anybody else have any suggestions?
He works 13 hour shifts by the way so nothing too scientific or time consuming please !!! xx
 
put salt. salt=melts ice :)

does not damage anything Plus you can carry a little bottle of slat with ease
 
Take an empty bottle and as he finishes his shift nip to the toilets and fill it with hot water, then tip it over the brakes
