Help with a biology question about Anion Exchange column?

An enzyme is passed through an Anion exchange column. the enzyme stays in the column. After elution, the enzyme is checked and doesn't seem to have any activity.
after that, the eluted enzyme is mixed back with the column's flow through. And now it regains activity.

What will be an explanation for that? What happened in the process?
