I was driving this car and out of nowhere there was a pop from under the hood and it lost power til it died. Since then, it is hard to crank up, but with it idling it sounds fine. You can drive it for a little bit (maybe 10 minutes) and then it does the same thing as described above and sounds horrible.

Can someone please tell me what the problem is..it is either backfiring from under the hood or the motor is making a knocking sound. Not sure which..

it sounds like it may have jumped out of time but thats just a guess at it,that woud explain the noise your getting from it, you need to have it checked, good luck.

It sounds like the timing has jumped and it's out of time. I'm not sure if you have a belt or a chain for your timing but i'm sure that it jumped a tooth or two. you might be able to loosen the distributor and turn it to see if it runs better if it does then you may need to replace the time belt & chain.

You may have broken your water pump pulley belt. I own a 1999 cougar and that happened to me. Your car will start fine but it will start over heating if you don't fix that belt and you are probably damaging the engine running it like that. On my car you have to take a plastic cover plate off on the right side of the engine if you where looking at the front of the car to see the broke belt. Anyway good luck
