I bought a new battery and put it in and the light is still on..
I unplugged the battery while it was running to make sure it wasn't the alternator and it wasn't.
what else could be the problem?

my battery was bad. I should have mentioned that every time i plugged the old battery up on a charger, it said "fault."
so no i didn't buy the wrong thing.
