help with 2000 dodge intrepid?

i have a 00 dodge intrepid 2.7 liter v6 with 100,000 miles that has been making a knocking noise. sounds like top end noise to me. it does this at idle in park mostly after being driven and at around 2000 rpms while driving. frequent maintenance has been done. one day after driving i noticed it had went 3 quarts oil low and i filled it up immediately. oil light hasnt come on and engine light hasnt come on . it calls for the timing belt to be changed and i havent did that yet.

i got under car and checked oil filter and drain plug bolt and they were tight but sludge was on oil plan. took to ase mechanic and he said noise sounded like bottom end(rod bearing, wrist pin) noise and oil sending unit was leaking bad. he did say too that it could be top end noise. he said water pump was ok. invoice did say need further diagnostic for engine sound. i dont know what i should do. i wanna get someone at a dodge dealership who is familiar with the 2.7 motors to check it out. im debating on getting rid of the car cause a motor and tranny would be expensive. i dont know, what could the problem be and what should i do?
