I'm in Los Angeles, and I heard that if you start a business where you buy/sell gold (jeweler, pawn shop, etc), your location has to meet some zoning laws that specifically allow you to work with gold. Also, you cannot work outside of said location. So, as I understand, you cannot go 20 miles out and buy from someone - they have to go to your store?
If I've gotten the right information: how are these online businesses asking to buy your gold licensed, or the businesses that have 'parties' at your house to measure and buy your jewelry? They service many areas - do they have to have a licensed office in each city they advertise to?
I would appreciate any insight on the matter from people who know what they're talking about.
I'm not going to start an online business or invite myself to people's houses, so I'm not in any way a competitor - I'm just trying to understand licensing and zoning.
Thank you.
