Help!!! Three flashing lights on Xbox 360 (the ring of death??!!??)?

My son has left for basic training in the army, and left his Xbox in the care of his brother and sister. Needless to say, now it is flashing the 3 red lights and will not work at all. Do I need to send it in for repair?? Is it worth the expense--or better to replace?? Do the fixes available online really help??
Not a great time for me financially, so the cheapest way to fix this HUGE problem , the better. Thanks for your help!!
 
yes, this would be the red ring of death. However, this situation may be reparable. If you had a power surge in the last few days, this may have caused it, and if this is the case unplug every cable from the socket and xbox and plug it back in. This happened to me, and after I did what I told you to do, it worked perfectly.

otherwise, repairing it would be cheaper.
