Help telling my mom news about schoolwork?

So, yesterday this big research paper and project was due. We had a paper and a presentation. I didn't do it, and I didn't hand it in. I was lucky and didn't get called up to present yesterday. Now, I still haven't finished it. (I am home today, I'm sick) My teacher said that she will call home if we are absent and ask why we aren't there... I'm scared that my mom will find out. How can I tell my mom before that I haven't done my project (getting in as little trouble as possible) before my teacher can tell her?
 
If you're sick, then tell your teacher that when she calls.

Why do you need to tell your Mum? Doesn't she know that you are ill?
