Help Setting Up Linux Media Server/Database?

Using Linux, I want to turn an old PC into a sort of database where it can hold all the household's music, video, photos and so on to share between four PCs. I also have a PS3 and would like to set up a media server so I can run stuff off the database on the PS3.

I've already looked into Samba to share the files between the Linux PC and the four Windows PCs, would that work and would it cause any problems between everything? Could I edit/add/remove a file from the database via my Windows PC and there be no problem?

I've also got an idea for the program I'd like to use for the media server. As I only need the media server to work with the PS3, I thought ps3mediaserver would be a good idea, would that be okay?

Lastly, as I only need the PC to run Samba and ps3mediaserver, I don't want a distro like Ubuntu that has a bunch of programs pre-installed. Is there a small-ish low power distro with a GUI that would run those two programs okay and be left on all the time?

I'm open to any advice, help or ideas, I should just warn you now that I'm a bit of a Linux noob and would like to avoid the terminal as much as possible.

Thanks! :)
