HELP REQUIRED!! Palm T|X Software ...

Hey All!

I've finally pulled my finger out and bought a Palm T|X ... :D I'm so excited, but after spending 2 solid years using Pocket PC (after switching from a Palm IIIx), I've kinda lost touch with the Palm OS world ... :( so I need your expertise ... yes you!

Ok, firstly, as you all probably know, Graffiti2 is a major pain, and even on Pocket PC, I was able to use a handwriting recognition system similar to Graffiti1 (called Block Recognizer). I know that it is possible to override the Graffiti2 system on the T|X but I'm not sure what program is the best to do this ... is it TealScript?? I want one that obviously is stable and has least impact on overall processor performance ...

Secondly, is there an application on PalmOS that throws up predictive text ... as Nokia mobiles and the Pocket PC does?? Like, say for example, if I am writing "ta" it tries to throw up possible words like "take", "taken" etc. Again, stability and performance impact are critical to me.



Final two questions ...

(1) Is the DocumentsToGo included with the T|X actually a full version? Or is it just a trial? I can't find anything that says it isn't limited somewhat ...

(2) Given I am a student and working part-time, I'll need to use my PDA to manage appointments and contacts, keep track of events and assignments, as well as planning. Will the standard Palm Apps (eg. ToDo, DateBook) allow me to do this effectively and efficiently, or do you recommend the use of some 3rd party tool as well??

I've been using TextPlus for predictive text input for years with a number of Palm devices (V, m505, T1) and I consider it the best.

I've just purchased a TX and it is causing reset problems with the Web Browser.

If that get's fixed, I would recommend no other.
 
Docs to go is the full version no purchase required. But it isn't the most recent version (7.xx?). Version 8 is out now. The main difference between the two is 8 includes native pdf support.

I agree, Textplus is great for predictive text. It can be enabled for all apps or it can be enabled selectively for only the apps you want. I had problems with it crashing some apps also so I disabled it in those apps.

There are solutions which over ride Grafitti 2. Try searching in these forums. Really though, the switch to Grafitti 2 isn't all that painful. I've heard people complain about it, but in my own experience there really wasn't that much of learning curve to overcome. But maybe I'm missing something...

The built in PIM apps will probably be sufficient. However, there are some great 3rd party apps which add a lot more functionality to the standard apps. I'd suggest Datebook5 or if you want to really go all out try Agendus. I've used Agendus for several years and wouldn't want to give it up. Both apps have trial versions. Be warned: whatever you try will probably spoil you and you won't want to go back to the built-ins.
 
Ok, I'm kinda biased in case some of you newbies don't know this but I am also a member of the Iambic Team Forum. As it is here at PDAStreets being a Moderator it's similar over at Iambic in the fact that both are volunteer positions. Neither is my day job nor provides any income.

Agendus is a full tilt contact manager program. It's the only one that I know of that can be called this and still uses the native PIM databases.

Datebook5 is a very good Calendar replacement program. DB5 is probably the best program for making just calendar entries. It is not a contact manager program. It's about 650K in size.

Agendus incorporates all of the 4 PIM databases and now has voice recording support as well as sketching support plus daily weather forecasts, quotes and history. Some would call it bloatware because it's about 1.6MB in size.

Ok I could go on and on but I won't get on the soap box.

Both programs have trial periods. Try both and see which one best suits your needs if the native Palm apps don't.

And my one solid word of advice: if a software developer requires you to pay before trying.....don't try their software.

I suggest you go to the Yahoo Datebk5 forum. Do a Search there because....

They now have a beta of Datebk6 out there, & the latest I've seen is Datebk6-v60a-p2-preview (search on those terms & you should get the url to download the file).

There have been comments there of bad experiences, but my TX hasn't had any, yet! ;-) There is a thread there entitled Datebk6 Same Old Datebk5, 4, by someone named Bill around Dec 25th & there are others that responded to his complaints - I still like Datebk5/6 - & he compares Agendus to Datebk in that thread.

Dtbk6, like 5 & 4, which I've used (& maybe 3, I just don't remember that far back!) does integrate nicely w/the ToDo database & has an option for a split screen to also display either phone #'s, ToDos, or Memos.

I just used the new PalmOS capability to list Birthdays in the native contact (phone book) & Dtbk6 beta 6.0a P2 found it very well & when I went to my the date of my brother's birthday & lo & behold, it was automatically listed - I didn't have to do anything. Anyway, there is a thread on the Yahoo group for PimlicoSoftware, that puts out Datebk6 (guess what, Dtbk6's author is there a lot too & is very, very responsive & knowledgable about coding Palm apps & functionality, albeit overworked! )

That text entry app you mentioned seems to have had reports about being incompatible w/TX or NVFS & you should find out if they have a version that is compatible w/TX. However,.....

Give www.exideas.com 's MessagEase a try. It is a great substitute text entry tool w/well thought out placement of the alphabet, in an order that is based on frequency of use & concentrated (easily handled) in what they call a stamp in 9 boxes that contain letters - you have to see it to really understand....
Text is entered by either tapping, tap & drag, or circling letters & while it takes some getting used to, it is well worth it.

It also does macros, & saves memory text to locations, & makes access to extended characters like $, or * etc. & the reciprocal setup of the stamp (which is split up in the DIA, between letters & numbers & the corners of each box w/in the 9 boxes i.e. if you drag right on the letter A towards the center of the box that contains the A, rather than on an angle up, or down, you will get the dash / - character, which is in the corresponding & reciprocal location w/in the numbers section; so you get a really good level of robustness in the app. The author is very responsive & often visits the Yahoo forum.


You can customize the STamp using MySkin, another excellent program that is well supported by the author & also has a Yahoo gp.

I use both on my TX & there were TX specific updates of both the prev mentioned apps (ME & MySkin) soon after the TX specific issues came up w/the release of the pda. BTW, I love my TX.

Also, check out Resco Locker at Resco.net. It is a tool that helps make certain apps more stable in the TX's NVFS file system. They also have a forum on their website that does a nice job of describing the issues for RLock & NVFS.

If you want to use a great launcher, use ZLauncher. It also has the Yahoo forum & was updated by the developers in china; (watch out for the language barrier, their site - zztechs.com's english is not that great; but they are responsive; & had a fix w/categories being lost in a week or so after TX showed up.

There's a version of Grafitti 1 about that's been hacked to run on the TX, you copy it over from an SD-Card then reboot, and your TX runs Grafitti 1. It's what I did to mine and works OK - I've not tried predictive text though. I also recommend the New TX Home button from Mobile Streams.
