Although I have no clue about the reception in your area, you should check with Cingular to see if they have 3G where you are. They have started to roll it out in the States and it has a better data rate than Verizon's EVDO network. I would skip going down to a kiosk and go to Cingular direct. I had one bright kiosk employee tell me that GSM phones worked with satellites!
If they do not have it, my next suggestion would be a Verizon EVDO capable phone or wireless card. The phones usually act as a modem when connected to a laptop via USB. If you get a capable phone, you will not need a phone and wireless card.
If Verizon's service is poor in your area, consider a good EDGE phone from Cingular. EDGE is the next fastest thing to EVDO for data. There are a number of models that support EDGE, but you'll want one capable of up to class 10 (the fastest on the market at this time). Motorola and Nokia tend to have the best reception. Sony Ericsson tends to be less than the best. Samsung does not have too many EDGE phones on the market yet.
