Hi there,
hoping someone can help me out here, for the last 3-4 weeks i have had a wet cough, first started out as a mild cold/flu type thing.
the cough seemed like it gets better than it gets worse again, now today i have got really bad chest pains above my right breast, mainly when i breath deeply or get up/move my shoulder a certain way, also if i touch it it is tender, i dont feel sick or anything, no fever, other than the cough and chest pain.
anybody have any idea what it could be? i have just recently moved to the US so i dont have insurance yet, so if i can avoid the high cost of going to the docs that would be good.
thanks for any help!!

Really the best thing you can do is visit a doctor. With what you've said, the best thing I can think of is acute bronchitis, which often starts out as accompanying or following a cold or a flu. It generally starts out as a dry cough and then progresses into a wetter one, which may last a few weeks. Acute bronchitis is characterized by a wet cough, shortness of breath, and wheezing. Chest pains, fever, and fatigue or malaise may also occur.

If you start coughing blood you should see a doctor as soon as possible. Should the cough last for longer than a month it would be important to see if a condition other than bronchitis was causing the symptoms.

Keep us posted! :)

Hi I am not promising a cure but some people enjoy that heating pad at night 20 minutes and an ice cube to follow for a few seconRAB and dried real well before falling asleep at night when a cough has bothered them. Is there a heating pad available?

re cost - many areas have low cost clinics that deliver excellent care.

for example, where i live, the local university school of medicine runs a clinic that charges on a sliding scale payment, depending on the pateint's insurance status and income, with care sometimes provided for free (depending ont he circumstances). the care is provided by medical students and residents, but all the care is overseen and signed off by a (full-fledged) attending physician.

Hi, have you seen a doctor? The quick service medical sites don't cost a terrible amt of money, and it really sounRAB like you need to see a doc. As far as the cough, that could be from nasal drainage. Have you tried an antihistimine or "mucinex". That might help. also, maybe try a cough syrup to get you some help until you can see a doctor.

Hi,

Using antihistamines can be harmful in the self-treatment of acute bronchitis (and a nuraber of other illnesses where a "wet cough" is exhibited) as expulsion of infected mucus through coughing facilitates recovery. Antihistamines can make mucus thicker which would detriment this ability. An expectorant cough syrup would have somewhat the opposite effect, making mucus thinner but at the expense of making a lot more of it. Alone without the antihist a cough syrup might help (though keep in mind not all cough syrups are the same), but to take both simultaneously would most likely not be a good idea.

The best thing to do is to just visit a doctor.

Thank you.

Oh yes when a person has an ordinary cold extra water thins the secretions making it easier to bring up and out. In the past I heard about how most of the cough medicines really don't stop a cough anyway. Some people have used herbal teas such as red clover, mint, lemon grass, catnip a sprig of rose leaves or geranium petals to make the water taste better. Slippery elm and mullein are said to be soothing. The heating pad might also be useful applied to the back area. Some people in the past have carefully inhaled some steam. I would turn off the heat first and remove it from the stove and be careful to make sure the steam is not hot enough to burn body, face or lungs before inhaling, some people in the past have put a drop of eucalyptus in this. In the opinion of some a towel or garment can be placed around the pan and head according to some people as the steam is inhaled it helps keep some of the warmth and steam around the head instead of quickly dissipating. Of course if a person chooses to do these things it is their own choice for healthcare yes or no.
