HELP! Phone hangs after sending each SMS

Hi guys,

I'm in need of some serious help here. I have a Nokia 6720c running s60. I have had it for just over 1 year. I get the phone to save ALL received and sent messages to my microSD card. I have well over 3000 messages now. But my problem is recently every time I send a message to somebody, my phone becomes unresponsive for 10-30 seconds. I can press buttons, and the phone registers some of these presses, but only does something about it much later.

In the past, when that happened I just gave the phone a hard reset (*#7370#) and things would go back to normal.

I used Free-iSMS and I thought that was the problem but I haven't installed it after I reset the phone.

I used to set the phone to save 999 messages, but in reality it saves everything. I have even tried leaving the saved message number at 100 after resetting the phone but it will still read all of the messages on my memory card.

Does anybody know how to fix this?

Thanks
Gino

not sure, maybe delete all your text messages? usually it's recommended to have messages go on the phone memory for better performance. and you can back up the messages if you need them for something.

Yes, I believe that I have experienced this with older (Or older-style anyway, since the 6720 isn't that old in terms of years...) Nokia phones as well. Even if you set the saved message limit after collecting a great deal of messages, it will not clean up for you. That limit acts as a FIFO queue, not a garbage collector. Thousands of messages will absolutely cause an older phone to choke when receiving new messages.

I would move those old messages off the card if you really want to keep them, or just delete them outright if you don't. Delete to the point that you have less than 100 messages, then after that the phone will prevent you from exceeding 100.

Seems like it is because I have too many messages on my memory card. Once i switch to phone memory it is much faster.

I will try backing up the memory card in Ovi, format it, and then put everything back on.

I remember trying to look for the directory where the SMS are stored in the memory card, but could not find it. They are suppose to be all synced up to my computer via Ovi Suite, but I can't find the files either. Any idea where I could find them and copy them over?

What's the best way to move mesages from an olde rphone (say a 6650, or OP's 6720) and have them be readable - on the PC or in text files etc on the phone? (but not overloading the weak phone's SMS app!)

I know Ovi Suite actually copies the messages over onto the PC so you can view them in Ovi Suite. However, I have no idea where they are physically located on the HDD. Once you format the HDD its gone.

I did a search a while back, and there are some programs that will backup the messages into a .txt file, but cannot be reimported to be viewed as actual SMS on the phone. S60 is weak like that.
