HELP. People in the production business?

I want to do many things in life, I want to be in the top of making shows, movies, events and stuff like a director or producer. But first I must have experience time (its like an ego for me) it is not for a job but in my mind i want to learn from other people in these ranks, like assistants. I need to know who to go for helping them with there stuff and i need ur help to find me people who would accept me in the NYC region.
