Hi,
In December I had a partial thyroidectomy which went fine and the biopsy was clear. (My thyroid levels were ok - the only reason I needed the operation was because my thyroid was enlarged and was pressing on my windpipe and cutting down my air intake by 50%). When I had my blood tests done about 3 weeks ago it showed that my thyroid was "running slow" which is common after a partial thyroidectomy. In turn, that was affecting my blood sugar (I'm a type 2 diabetic) that's been running high since the beginning of January, and also my cholesterol which I'm on medication for is high. The docs have now put me on Eutirox 25 micrograms (it's a Spanish medication and is presumably the Spanish equivalent of Thyroxin) which I've been taking 1 tab per day for the past week.
Sorry to be so long winded! But my problem is this;
Since my operation, my memory has gotten worse. When I had a hysterectomy a few years ago, I recall that the anaesthetic made my memory bad, and it was though words had been erased from my brain and it was like looking at a whiteboard with sentences on, but with some of the words missing.
Well, it's been like that again since my thyroidectomy, and I wasn't worried. But lately it's got much worse. I'm totally forgetting things after a few minutes. Not just forgetting them for a short while, it's as though they've been totally wiped from my brain - the latest thing, as an example, is that today I put some potatoes in the oven to bake while I popped up to the shops for a few bits. It should have taken no longer than half an hour. But by the time I'd gone down the path to the car, I'd forgotten all about the potatoes, and went wandering round the market, stopped at the vets to ask about having the cat snipped, called at the bank and took my time changing my pin number, strolling round the supermarket without a care in the world and finally calling at a friend's house on the way home, spending 15 minutes talking to her. When I got home and strolled up the path with the shopping, I walked into the kitchen and there was black smoke pouring out of the oven. THEN and only then I remembered having put the potatoes in there before going out! We live in a mobile home. We were minutes from the whole thing going up in smoke! My husband said he'd told me something to which I replied to him and I have no recollection of this whatsoever and that was only yesterday morning. Could this be connected to the anaesthetic, my thyroid or early onset alzheimer's? It's really starting to worry me now. I'm sorry for such a long post, but I really dont know what the hell to think.
Many thanks in advance if anyone has any ideas at all.
