I have had two marbled hatchet fish for about 4 months now and they have both been fine, up until two days ago when I brought home some guppies from a friend and one of them jumped out of the tank. Thankfully I managed to get him back in (carefully) and he seemed ok; just a bit disoriented. Yesterday he was back to his old self; swimming at the top and playing with his buddy. But today I have noticed that he isn't moving (he's still breathing though) and not just not moving but he can't seem to stay upright or anything and just floats around like a leaf and getting sucked towards the filter and pushed away by the current. He CAN move because he does so when he gets swept away by the current but once he is in calm water he just goes limp again. At the moment he is 'resting' against the cross section of the filter as he has got sucked there and will not move away. Should I turn off the filter or leave it off, if I leave it on he's just going to stay there because of the sucking, but if I turn it off he's going to float around limply. Does anyone have any ideas what is wrong because I'm really worried?!
Thanks,
Dan
Thanks everybody for your advice but unfortunately, I just got back from the shop and found him dead. That's the 10th fish in 5 months. So a new question. Am I doing anything wrong - what do you do to care for your fish (temp, food, etc. (everything)) and I can see from what you say if I am doing anything wrong. I have 4 guppies, 1 hatchet now, 4 neon tetras and one otoclinus catfish. Thanks again.
Thanks,
Dan
