My husband is 45 yrs old and keeps me awake at night due to his muscle spasms. He is not bothered by the spasms they are not painful and do not wake him...only me do they keep awake. The spasms are most common in his legs, then arms amd upper back. Leg spasms usually consist of lifting leg 8-10 inches off bed and falling down..every 15-20 seconds like clockwork. Arm spasms are usually in the forearm and are similar to a seizure lasting only a few seconds...tonight the spasms were 3-5 seconds apart. Upper back spasms are more like the muscles twitching much like a horse does when a fly lands on it...if that makes any sense!!! He is diabetic and has high blood pressure and cholesterol. He takes meds to control the diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol. Does anybody have any suggestions to help other than sleeping in separate beds?? I need some sleep!!!!

I guess my first thoughts on this is that none of it is normal and I would guess your husband is not getting a restful night sleep as well so why not go in with him to his doctors appt with a list of things that he does at night and perhaps ask for a sleep study to be done to determine why he does it and if it can be treated. I sat up for hours one night writing down all the strange things husband did at night and discussed it with doctor so Some night or on nights that you are awake keep a detailed record of what he does at what time of the night..including details like is he gasping for air or does he stop beathing for a period of time or just what ever you observe at night and if this is a nightly event and how long has it been going on...things like that with times and dates. I would think any reasonable doctor would worry about why he was doing these unusual activities at night...perhaps he has a form of sleep apnea that needs treatment...or like in my husbands case he actually had a 99% blocked artery and needed treatment right away but our only clue was his night time 'weirdness'. good luck.

Thanks...I have asked my husband to ask our doctor and he says he did. I may have to go in with him and insist that something be done...my husband hates getting any kind of medical tests. If he did mention this to our doctor, I can be assured that he just mentioned it in passing and was not insistant on getting some help with this issue. I am also concerned about his sleeping and actually getting a restful sleep...he can't possibly be getting a good nights sleep. I do think it has to do with breathing patterns...he seems to snore real loud when he is fixing to spasm. Thank you again!!

I agree that your husband may have sleep apnea and a sleep study should help get to the bottom of the problem. Some of the muscle spasms could also be caused by the statin he is taking for his cholesterol. He needs to be taking COQ10 supplements with the statin. Do some research on statin side effects and see if any of the problems fit. I wish you well.
