help! My automatic transmission toyota corolla rolls forward on a steep hill in reverse?

I recently purchased a used 2007 toyota corolla hatch. it is an auto transmission. when i was parked on a hill, facing down, i tried to put the car in reverse to get out of a parking spot. rather than holding its position, the car rolled forward once i took my foot off the brake until i put it on the accelerator. i had to use a hand brake start to avoid rolling into the car in front. is this normal? what do you think is wrong with the car? thanks!
 
there is nothing wrong that is normal. the down grade of the hill and the weight of the car is too much for the torque converter to hold in gear.
