help me pick a quality mountain bike for a big guy (270lbs)?

depending on the type of mountian biking your into... for cross country, look into specialized, stumpjumpers. the stumpjumpers are top of the line for cross country. also, trek, garyfisher, rocky mountain, and cannondale all make decent cross country bikes. My brother has owned 2 rocky mountain bikes each for 5 years and they have held up amazingly. so i recommend rocky mountain and specialized. if your not into cross country mountain biking... well.. then i just wasted a lot of time explaining this.

Visit the local bike shops. I know Trek rates their bikes at 300 lbs in their manual and the other manufactures bikes should hold that much if not more. Check out Giant, Cannondale, Specialized, Fuji, Jamis, and whatever else is available in your area.

Edit:
The last thing you want is a full suspension bike, they are made for guys that are 140 - 170 lbs. Stick to a hardtail.
