Help me decide whether to leave At&t.

I'm on an individual plan with At&t in South Texas, and my contract is up for renewal. I get 450 anytime minutes($40), unlimited data and texting ($30). Many of my family and friends are on At&t so the mobile to mobile really helps keep my minutes down. I use an unlocked nokia s60, so I do get full smartphone functionality.

I really want to try android, but the iphone really has at&t locked down, and it seems like at&t may not get a decent android device for several more months. I'm also starting to think that at&t's network is really falling behind the competition.

I have been searching sites like letstalk.com, wirefly.com, and amazonwireless looking for comparable plans. I would like to find a plan that has enough minutes, unlimited data and texting that will keep me under or around $100. Does that even exist other than my current plan? Where else should I be looking?

The phones I'm looking at are the Droid, Eris, Cliq, HTC hero, and mytouch.
 
If you can't find a deal you are happy with, you should consider buying an Android device from Canada, as you can find popular device(Magic(Mytouch 3G) and Hero) with AT&T 3G bands. Its pricey, but if you'd save the cash from the cheaper plan...why not?

But I'm thinking T Mobile should have something that meets you need. Depending on if you want to sign a 2 year contract over there, you are looking at 59.99 for unlimited text, web and 500 mins(thats without a device, with a device it will be more, but I'd imagine under 100 max)
 
You should base your decision on coverage, not the device. If ATT has the coverage you need, when and where you need it, then you really need to evaluate if you want to change carriers.
 
I'm fully aware of the coverage issue and several carriers are good in texas. It's not really that easy to compare. At&t, t-mobile, sprint and verizon all have great coverage in my area. I know people with personal experience that can verify that. So the device and plan is more important to me right now.
 
Exactly. If your phone and service is doing what it needs to do, don't listen to all the media tripe about the iPhone and AT&T's network. If you're getting what you need currently, why change?

Network problems in New York and San Fran doesn't mean AT&T's network is going down the tubes, and my sister's coverage and quality of service in South Florida is certainly nothing to sneeze at...[/COLOR]
 
My main reason for wanting a change, as stated above, is that i want to try an android phone. I can't do that on at&t because they don't have one which i speculate is due to the iphone. Please help with ideas on best combo of android device and plan. The coverage is too hard to compare in my area.
 
Tmob's got the CLIQ. Verizon's got the Droid and Eris. All three seem to be pleasing their respective owners. If Tmob's coverage in your area is good, why not give the CLIQ a try? Tmob's plans are certainly attractive.
 
That's not true at all. You can go with the dream. Hero and magic have north american versions too. Then there is the sony x10a that will be coming early next year.

And if you can live without 3g. Then you can go for milestone, and probably a few more.

There are also plenty of android phones coming in 2010.
 
I just switched from ATT to Verizon a few weeks ago. I debated over the Droid and Eris. I ended up with the Eris. Great phone, but that's not the entire reason why I switched.

First was the network. I get great Verizon coverage where I live and travel. ATT? Not so much anymore, it's gone down the tank. Second, customer service. Verizon blows ATT out of the water on this one, really.

I did the trial before porting my number over, but it didn't take long to make the decision.The rest of my family is still on ATT because of the jesus phone.
 
I do have to say, AT&T gave very spotty coverage. I use Verizon, and I haven't lost service once. Even if I only have 1 bar of service, I still have enough. On AT&T, They lose/gain service quickly, where Verizon seems to be more stable.
I would deffinately try either the Droid or Eris. They seem like GREAT phones. They just aren't my cup of tea. I'm not a fan of touch screen phones. But they seem to fit other people great!

i got an N900 a couple weeks ago and switched to TMO so i can enjoy 3g. so far so good. cant beat the price. even more plus plan-500 min unlimited data and text for $59.99. i know at&t has more widespread coverage throughout texas but for where im at 95% of the time TMO has just as good of coverage and im pulling faster 3g speeds from TMO. plus with their upcoming 3g upgrades and HSPA+ 21Mb/s coming in 2010 im ok with giving them a shot. im paying 30 less a month right now for a better experience in my area. cant beat that.

by the way the Nexus One is coming soon with TMO 3g. that is the android device i would want.
 
How is your 3G coverage?
Yeah if you want the newest Android phones T-Mobile's got what you need, as far as support for 3G and no contracts, good pricing, etc.
 
my coverage has been surprisingly good. T-Mobile has come a long way in the last year and i expect them to continue to improve in 2010. AT&T isnt gonna disappear by any means but now is a good time to kick them while they are down due to the bad pub about the network problems and I think TMO knows that and continue their rapid expansion and upgrade of their 3g network. im in Vegas now at the Bellagio and show 3.5g. have yet to drop to edge. so far everywhere ive been the last couple weeks has been solid .
 
I live here and 3G isn't completely deployed, my home area is mostly 2G. Neglected quite a few of the housing developments, otherwise 3G is mostly covering the valley.

Can you do a speedtest? I have a TP2 and I never see above 1mbps here and I have a feeling that it's the TP2's fault.
