What would you recommend?

It's mostly for Emails and Web stuff, I don't talk much

the phones seem to be very similar in size

the Q would be with Verzion
the Blackberry would be with T-Mobile

ps: my email will all be coming from gmail, dunno if that makes any difference

Which carrier provides better service where you will be using the device - i.e. where you live, work, play, travel, etc.? That shoudlbe the first wuestion you ask. If you travel overseas, then T-Mo or Cingular (GSM) would be your choices.

Which BB are you considering? The 8100 (Pearl) is more consumer oriented where as the 8700 is more business oriented, although both lean toward business users, moreso thatn other phones.

Look at the features of each phone. Does it do what you want it to do, mp3s, camera, etc.? The Q has a camera, the BB does not, except for the Pearl. From what I hear, the Q does not have "cut and paste" capability. That is a negative in my book. But then so is SureType in the Pearl.

I live in NYC
Will mostly use in NYC
Sometimes in Vegas/LA/Chicago (big cities mostly)... but 95% of the time I'll be in NYC

Looking only at the 8100 Pearl model...
I can't decide between BlackBerry Pearl 8100 vs Motorola Q

I don't really need any of that stuff... a camera is nice but it's just a toy
What's important to me
- easy to type emails, messages, notes
- good internet connection, stuff like Maps and Weather reporting
- it's gotta be loud enough for me to hear it in the subway station

Easy to type - go with the Q because of the QWERTY keyboard.

Good Internet connection: That depends on the carrier, more than the phone itself. Only Verizon has the Q, so that is probably the choice there.

Loud. Can't help you there.

Have you looked and searched for info on the Q and the Pearl on the forums?

I haven't used either one, so I am just going by what you told us so far.

take a look at the nokia e61 on gsm arena. i just decided to pick it up . I was in the same place as you when i realized the use of the symbian os in nokia was just awesome. you cant really go wrong with nokia (not being a fanboy or anything.) check up on its features, im sure you won't be disappointed.

smood the features look very nice, but I compared the dimensions and the e61 seems a little big
both the Q and the Pearl are pretty small, which is a big plus

I would second the E61, while it is wider for sure, more comparable to the 8700 in size, it is by far a superior device to both the Pearl and the Q, it can do email from anyone, Gmail, Blackberry Connect, exchange push whatever you want. I would drop the Q right off your list, its a plastic piece of... in my opinion, its got a very small screen and the build quality is cheap. The Pearl I have not played with but it looks nice and has good features, but again its got a small screen, so lots of scrolling to read your emails, I know it doesn't have a scroll wheel but none the less, with the narrow screen you will have to browse down to read your emails; the E61, with its wider screen, fits emails better for reading. The build quality on the E61 is solid, wifi works great as does BT, sound quality and RF are great and it has the BEST screen of any phone out there, 16million colours, looks gorgeous. Think about the E61, you won't regret it.

I vote also for e61 (realizing that it wasn't one of the options to begin with). A friend of mine has the Q and we've compared them, and the Q does feel plasticky and cheap. They are actually about the same size physically but the e61 is a bit heavier, and that's because it has this cool solid metal feel to it. The keys are better too.

The biggest dif betw. the Q and the BB pearl is that the former is CDMA or whatever Verizon is, and the latter is a GSM device. The Q uses EV-DO which is, in theory, faster than EDGE (which the GSM Pearl would use). That having been said, in our comparison, my (EDGE) e61 is actually faster browsing the web than my friend's Q. Not sure why. He mentioned also that the Pearl is supposed to be really fast, maybe because you have to use BB servers, like the sidekick? Not sure how that works.

Also, the Pearl has that weird keyboard thing. Seems difficult to learn. QWERTY seems like a better idea. I think also the Pearl has wi-fi? The Q does not.

Personally I think the Pearl would be my suggestion between those two, except for the keyboard.

But I'd recommend the e61 before either.

I have the blackberry pearl and I'm using it with T-mobile. I basically just use it to check emails and browse the internet every now and then. I've never owned a blackberry prior to this one. However, I would have to say that I have no regrets in getting the Pearl. It's user-friendly and has good features. The screen is nice and bright too. I've never used the Motorola Q so I don't know much about that phone. Then again, I don't like Verizon. I would recommend the Blackberry Pearl.

I would defiently go with teh Blackberry Pearl.

This thing was my favorite phone.

The suretype isnt that bad, as long as your not used to Qwerty. I got used to it very quickly. Also the earpiece on this thing is amazing. Everyone and everything sounds great.

Plus the Blackberry Pearl is smaller then the Q. \

You also mentioned you would also like Easy email and web browsing.

The Blackberry is the best in its class. Blackberrys are good at what they do, which is email. Thats why RIM is known for, its extrodinary email.

Web browsing was also pleasing, you get a GPS application built in to, so maps arent a problem. You just need a Bluetooth Gps reciever.

Overall, go with the Pearl, you wont regret it!

It still is my phone, I meant I dont own it anymore. But it still my favorite phone.

And I said Suretype is fine if your not used to Qwerty. I know Qwerty is better but Suretype is a nice alternative. I learned it rather quickly. And the earpiece/speaker whatever you want to call it, the thing you listen to peopel talk on....you know....

And the screen is hardly smaller. At least it fits the device. i think they could make the screen on the Q a LITTLE bigger for the size of the device. The Pearl is much smaller, yet has a screen that is barely smaller then the Q.

And the Q isnt the hottest thing on the block when it comes to Wifi and a good camera. From what i have heard and tested the camera on the Q is JUST AS CRAPPY. And does the Motorola Q have Wifi? I dont think so.

And really if you want a simple gps application for occasional use it is fine. I dont think you need to spend all that money on a seperate GPS just to use it a few times a month.

When the Motorola Q Pro is released we can talk comparisons. I cant wait, because it will far surpass the crappy CDMA Motorola Q.

No problem, I am here to help.

Well there is no set date for the Q Pro yet. Most people believe early/1st half of next year, which I would say is accurate.
