ok so im using GIMP and im trying to make a gif image.
can someone help me?

A simple image is easy. Just do a File>Save As... and (a) give the file a GIF extension, or (b) select GIF as the file type in the Save As dialog. If your image has layers, let it flatten the image (no animation) and choose convert-to-indexed for color or convert-to-grayscale depending on your image.

For animations, the each layer is an animation frame. The layer names are used to hold frame display options. Best way to see how to make it work is to get somebody else's animated GIF and open it with Gimp.

Well i've just had a go at creating a animation using GIMP (first time)

The way I did it was by using layers.
To view the layers click on windows >> Recently closed docks >> Layers channels paths...

Start drawing on the first layer as normal then draw what you want to appear next on the next layer and so on.
create a new layer by going to layer >> then new layer. then you can choose either transparent, foreground, background or white as the background (each has it's uses). Keep adding as much layers as you want.

then save the file as a .gif file and select save as animation.

Hope this helps.

Very easy, that. Basically, every layer is a frame of the image. When you go to save it save it as an Animated GIF image, and you should get a few options... once you do that you'll have a GIF, tada =D
